Calling all WordPress Safari users

Thanks for visiting. For all the latest articles, check out our new home at http://wolfshowl.com.

OK, we all hate the way that Safari 3.0.x strips out line / paragraph breaks when we use the Visual Editor. As we all know, this is a limitation of WordPress / TinyMCE / Safari, which is (hopefully) under development for a fix.

In the meantime, there is a way round it - for Mac users anyway - that means you don’t have to change browsers just to post to WordPress. I’ve done some limited testing on this process and it seems to work, but I’ve not had a chance to use it extensively so don’t know yet if it breaks anything else. As always, if you’re going to try this, take precautions!

1. If it’s open, close down Safari.
2. Open Terminal
3. At the prompt, type this: defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1
4. Start Safari.
5. If you’ve done it right, you’ll see that you have a new “Debug” menu item. Click this.
6. Select “user agent”
7. Select a browser that isn’t Safari. I chose “Firefox 2.0.0.2″

That’s it.

I’ve only tested this fix on Safari 3.0.x - but then Safari 2 never had the same problem - but it has allowed me to write and edit posts using the Visual Editor and without losing line breaks.

If someone out there can hack the Windows version in a similar way, then this problem might finally be solved.

Additional: I’ve also now tested this with my WordPress.org Visual Editor and it doesn’t seem to work so well with that. Testing continues…

And more: it looks like it can be problematical sometimes; I’ve been able to write and update posts without any problems, btu I’ve also had the old problems too. Testing continues…

All opinions in this blog are either my own or else they’re made up just to get a rise out of you and make you angry. Either way, they’re probably not very well thought out or expressed so do yourself a favour and don’t take the world so seriously.

can you tell me how to turn off the debug menu? do I change the 1 to 0.

I only ask as it’s best not to have stuff like that lying around

    ta

  3. Wolfie Says:

Yes, that’s what you need to do. That will then switch it off again. However, I’m not sure if it will also revert the user-agent setting to Safari, so if you are using this hack to be able to use the Visual Editor, then it may go back to stripping out line breaks.

I shall have a test and report back…

You’re right, turning off the debug menu reverts it to UA Safari and the para’s go.

Do you know if switching the UA to Firefox 2.0.0.2 has and speed issues, or any other issues for that matter?

    thanks

  6. Wolfie Says:

Sorry, I don’t. The testing that I’ve done didn’t reveal any issues, speed or otherwise, but this is computing; what works for one person on one day may catastrophically fail for another person on another day.

I have to say that I’ve gone back to using Flock as I find it a much better browser than Safari. It also has a built-in blog editor, so I’m also not using the WordPress editor anymore. So this means that my testing has stopped. If you do find any issues that others should know about, let me know and I’ll do an updated post.

Thank you! I was beyond ecstatic when I saw the Visual Editor had the correct menu items after upgrading to the new Safari. Then my first post didn’t have the paragraph breaks and I just about threw my Mini out the window. But then I remembered my new mantra: “Don’t scream and shout ’bout all the bugs in Mac, just search the web to find the latest hack.” So two minutes of searching found this and it’s now working. And my blood pressure is returning to its normal levels.

  8. Wolfie Says:

Glad it works for you Ken; keep in mind, though, that it is a hack so is not perfect. It doesn’t seem to break anything else on the system, but it does sometimes behave erratically with the WordPress Visual Editor.

  9. Allan Says:

    ahhhh…

    I want my paragraphs back… soon…

  10. Wolfie Says:

Now that WordPress.com has been upgraded to WordPress 2.5, the Visual Editor works with Safari - no more stripping out of line breaks, etc.

At least there’s something good about that horrible new dashboard!
